Better late than never…here we are with Show 200! And some reminders of old shows you might have missed.
Back in 2012 I started doing internet radio, just playing music I liked once a week. A colleague (hi Bill) played a live bootleg on his show one time and I got the idea to do another show doing similar, if I could make them sound better. About 60 got done and broadcast before the station disappeared a few years later.
When I first started tinkering with old live recordings and broadcasting them I never thought I’d still be doing them 12 years later, never mind making it to show 200. But here we are…
Show 200 - Gary Numan - Exile Tour 1998
This is a rare show - recordings of this tour are not common. I am indebted to a friend of mine who was at the show and recorded it to DAT - the first time he had snuck a recorder into a show. He did a great job. 2 things to note though.
The original recording was wiped many years ago - the only copy of this gig was on MP3. First thing I did when I approached this one (as I always do if I can only find MP3 copies) is to save it as a lossless WAV file for editing, so all the edits were saved losslessly, and no further degradation can take place. Indeed, unless you have super human hearing (or analyse waveforms to an unhealthy degree) you would never know now.
2nd thing is - well, quite a bit of Are “Friends” Electric? is missing - it cuts off part way through. So I faded it out and blended it back in with the audience applause that came next. Far less “jarring” to listen to that way.
That’s pretty much it - as usual with audience recordings I removed some of the hall ambience, then spent much time improving the sound quality before mastering it. As my friend who taped it said yesterday “I just listened…Simply outstanding! The sound is very crisp and bright. I feel like I was actually at the show itself when I listened to it...and I was there”.
You can go straight to the site page by clicking on the graphic below, where you can read more about it, what I did to it - and download or stream it for free, of course, as 1 single 320kbps MP3:
If you like it, and know others who might also be interested - please do share the website link with them. Or this newsletter! And don’t forget there are many other Numan shows on the site here.
As always, if anyone wants separated MP3s or FLACs of this (or any other) gig on the site, details are on the page for that too.
Past Shows
A couple of gigs were done this week in years gone by so I thought I’d post them up for anyone who missed them. In each case, just click on the image to go to the site page and check it out.
First, from this week in 2016 a landmark gig at the very end of 199 by Jean Michel Jarre in Egypt, with the pyramids as his stage set (not that you can see that, it’s a sound file after all!). There is video on YouTube I believe of the gig but the sound quality here is way way better. I originally did this in 2013 but it was only years later that someone pointed out I’d inexplicably left off 1 of the tracks…oops. So it got done again in 2016, and here it is:
(and if you’re a Jarre fan, you can find ALL the shows I’ve done by him here.
And second, an exciting performance by Elvis Costello and The Attractions from 1978! I originally restored this one this week in 2018 - although it got improved further in 2020. Well worth downloading if you haven’t already.
One more, why not? From this week in 2020, Slade! Live at the Glasgow Apollo in 1982. Coming towards the end of their career together but still putting on a great show - with a great Glasgow crowd in full support. This is a great show.
(all my Slade shows are here)
That’s all for this time.
I hope you find something to listen to from 1 of these. And if not, there’s a whole TON of other stuff on the site! Until next time…have a great weekend!
Cheers!
Phil
